Mothers are like robots. Really smart robots.

I was walking through the mall tonight, on my way to my car after my bus ride home, and I came to the elevator.

Don't judge me. I was wearing a narrow skirt, so taking the stairs would have meant certain death.

And awkward walking.

And I'm a lazy bum.

Anyway... walking to car, waiting for elevator.

And then a mom approached with her cute toddler son.

She reached across and took some hand sanitizer from a dispenser hanging next to the elevator. She wiped her hands and then wiped her son's hands.

And then I stared and stared.

I pass that elevator on a daily friggin' basis and never, not once, have I ever noticed that damn hand sanitizer dispenser thingie hanging on the wall.

Which made me think that mothers can probably spot those things a mile away. Like tunnel vision, zeroing in on it. They probably have their eyes trained to pick out every possible opportunity to clean their child.

Either that or I'm a sick pig who never washes her hands.

But I'm hoping it's the mother thing.

  1. I definitely don't have that in mom instincts. My kid will usually spot the hand sanitizer before me. Of course, I could be a sick pig as well. :)

  2. My mom and I were just talking today about how gross people are. Not you, of course. You're not a pig. But other people. And kids. Ugh. They're the worst. And people who don't wash their hands after they poo. Seriously, WHY DON'T THEY WASH THEIR HANDS?! Are they allergic to soap. And what's up with the hair I found baked into my cookie the other day? Sick. So sick. I'm going to go take a bleach bath now.

    1. EW EW EW. But how do you know people are pooping and not washing? Do you just hide out in bathrooms?

  3. I never notice them things unless I am with my children who are usually filthy and still suck on their fingers.

@Sarcasm Goddess.. I will never eat a cookie again!

    1. SEE? Unless you are with your children! You totally spot them when you're in your mom role.

  4. This theory of your could indeed be true. What I wonder is, has hand sanitizer replaced good old fashioned mom spit? You know how our moms would lick their thumbs and rub it on our faces? Your mom did that, right? I've done it to my kids.

  5. You are probably right about the mom thing..I have never been a sanitizer even my kids were little. Not that we weren't clean, I'm just not a germaphobe. I think that may be the line of sick pig right there, I'm on your side.

  6. I have kids and I don't see nor use the hand sanitizer thingys. I don't even keep some in my purse. CPS will be knocking on my door any day now.

  8. I am that mom, the one who can spot a sanitizer a mile away.. It’s a gift... of course I don’t use them unless they are electronic. I figure the last person that used it was dirty, there were probably out of soap or TP in the bathroom and since it was close they figured it was an easy fix so now when I go to use it I have their.....ya know all over my hands... so I keep one in my bag purse at all times, and desk at work, and car, and kitchen... but I’m not a germaphobe....really I’m not.... anyways look between the doors at your local gas station (inside) and by the buggies at the grocery store... you will find them...

    1. Not a germaphobe?! ;)

I don't get the fear of touching a soap dispenser. Seems to me that it doesn't matter if anyone touches it before you use it, because you're about to wash away whatever germs they may have left behind...

But again, maybe I'm a pig.

  9. I am a mom, and a dirty pig. I sometimes rush my kids out of a public restroom without washing because it seems dirtier to stay in there any longer, and cause they haven't touched anything wet. I dont have hand sanitizer in my bag, I dont even like that stuff, its nasty. I do a tad better with my baby, she is a thumb sucker, but I prefer just wipes. My kids are no strangers to dirt.
